Remodeling Your Home to Save Energy
Many reasons exist to remodel your home, from adding more space to upgrading the quality of your home. However, one of the best reasons to remodel your home is to reduce energy expenditure. How do you reduce the amount of energy used in your home or building? What steps can you take to save energy? Why should you reduce the amount of energy spent in your home?
Windows – Changing your windows for modern, double-paned energy efficient windows is an excellent way to reduce the amount of energy spent due to heating and cooling loss. Old, single paned windows allow heat and cold to escape much more easily than do other types of windows. You will also find other options on the market, if double paned glass is not to your liking, including windows with window treatments set within them and much more.
Insulation – Many homes lose heating and cooling due to insufficient insulation. Consider adding more insulation to your attic, to the underside of your home and even between the walls of your home. If you are remodeling your home and adding new walls, new sheetrock to existing walls or adding entire rooms, this is an excellent time to do this. You will also find more options on the market than simple, traditional fiberglass insulation, including sprayed in insulation, 'green' insulation materials and other options.
Toilets – The amount of water wasted through old, high-flow toilets can be considerable. Consider adding low-flow toilets to your home to help reduce the amount of water wasted with each flush. This will not only save water and energy, but will even reduce your water bill each month.
Doors – While you are remodeling your home, take a look at your doors. Chances are good that you could install a new, energy efficient door and save even more energy during the course of the year. These doors have a better mounting method, as well as a better construction method, which helps keep your heating and cooling where it belongs – in your house. In addition, consider adding glass storm doors, rather than screen doors to save even more energy.
Of course, there are hundreds of other ways to reduce energy use and save money on your monthly power bill. If you are really serious about it, you can install solar panels on your home, or even consider using a wind turbine to help produce your own energy and feed surplus energy back into the power grid.
